After a decade on and a decade off, Stockton, California’s indie rock monarchs are back by popular demand. When Slanted and Enchanted rattled into the ears of the 4-track crowd in 1994, the album became the flagship example for aspiring, lo-fi songwriter/producers all over North America. Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain took Stephen Malkmus et al to new levels of notoriety, and like predecessors The Fall, the band built its home base around glorious and sticky earworm anthems that couldn’t really be sung.
Initially inspired by British post-punk and American college rock, Pavement developed its own signature sound: shaggy melodies, loping rhythm, and guitars that jangle and thunder. They may have missed the alt-rock gravy train that passed through the USA in the mid-’90s, entrusting their five LPs and numerous EPs to indie labels, yet still managed to become one of the most influential bands of their time.
